Meet The Cast

in the midst of them - synopsis
In American history, 1915 to 1960 is often referred to as the Great Migration, to signify the millions of blacks who moved from agricultural South to the industrialized North in hopes of work and a better way of life. The Mourning family was part of that migration, headed to New York City, however, due to a financial crisis their dreams were deferred. Having to make a home in another poverty-stricken coal mining town, the family suffers from insurmountable strife caused by infidelity, abuse, abandonment, oppression, injustice, race and racism. In the midst of the splintering and dissolution of the nuclear family structure, the protagonist character Harold Mourning emerges to lead the first successful black and white collective labor union to strike for better wages and a better way of life.
In The Midst of Them, a new play, is inspired by his grandmother's stories as a coal miner’s daughter. It depicts the way of life in a coal mining town centered around many universal themes: betrayal, escaping reality through alcoholism, wanting to belong, redemption, and the power of forgiveness. The full-length play is not a musical, however, it has original lyrics: "A Coal Miner's Cadence" and "Jazzy Beat" are just a few soulful songs to leave an indelible impression on the audience.

A Rose Among Thorns CREATED AND PERFORMED by Ella Joyce
A ROSE AMONG THORNS explores the "famous incident", but is driven to do so through Rosa -- the real person. Not only a woman with a quiet dignity, but a woman with a quiet fire who is fully human with emotions. Strength. Weakness. Humor. Triumphs. A real human being, not just an iconic figure. This loving collection of historical information seeks to straighten out the occasional misinformation that sometimes surrounds her "famous incident". Growing up in Detroit, Ms. Joyce feels that she shares a type of "hometown kindred spirit" and a love for the community with Rosa Parks.
A ROSE AMONG THORNS pays tribute to Mrs. Parks in hopes of not only keeping her story alive orally, and celebrating her exemplary character, but also seeks to infuse others (young and old), with her spirit to seek social change, and to choose involvement with political and civic issues concerning us today.
Mrs. Parks tells her story simply as she speaks of things past, present, and eternal. Other key players out of this extraordinary period of American History are also memorialized, in this affectionate salute to such an incredible, yet seemingly simple, woman.
